Ypres welcomes the world's best from 19-21 August!
History was made last year as, for first a round of the FIA World Rally Championship was held in Belgium, and specifically it was the Ypres Rally. This year, Ypres will host the WRC’s best, as the Ardeca Ypres Rally will host the 9th round of the 2022 FIA World Rally Championship from August 19 to 21.
Talk about a surprise! Due to the pandemic, Club Superstage had the unique opportunity last year to promote to the FIA World Rally Championship with the Ypres Rally. It was a great rally party, won by our compatriots Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe. It is clear that the organisation made a strong impression on its debut at the highest level, because Ardeca Ypres Rally has found its place on the 2022 FIA World Rally Championship calendar!
"On the provisional calendar of the FIA World Rally Championship, the 9th round was set for the weekend of August 19 to 21, but the name of the rally had not yet been announced," said Alain Penasse, President of Club Superstage. "There were several candidates for that place. A few weeks ago, we were asked by the WRC Promoter whether we wanted to take that place with the Ardeca Ypres Rally. Both Wolf Oil, partner of the FIA World Rally Championship, and Ardeca, the naming sponsor of the rally, have made efforts to make this second Belgian World Championship round possible. As a Club, we are very happy to be able to bring the FIA World Rally Championship to Ypres again. It is a reward for the efforts that the whole club, all volunteers, our partners and local authorities last year to make that first edition a success."
Yves Decat, Global Marketing Director Wolf Lubricants: “As a Belgian based exclusive Lubricant Partner of the World Rally Championship we are continuously looking for additional ways to increase the presence and reach of this breath-taking sport. We are excited to support the return of the Ypres Rally Belgium in the calendar for 2022 by joining forces with rally’s main partner Ardeca Lubricants.”
Ypres is a rally city
The format of the competition may be changed. "It is still too early to make definitive statements about this, but this time we will provide a stage on the Grote Markt in Ypres, for an atmospheric ceremonial start," continues Alain Penasse. "We will also organise a side event this year for the national classes and the Historic cars, so that we can bring all classes of the Belgian championship to the start."
It is an honour for the City of Ypres to host a match of the FIA World Rally Championship.
"Obviously we are honoured to once again host the WRC," said Mayor Emmily Talpe. "It already shows that the organisation, our city and the wider environment were appreciated last year. Bringing in the WRC round for the second time will mark Ypres place on the map even more strongly, at home and abroad, as a rally city. Not only for motorsport enthusiasts, but also for the catering industry, the accommodation sector, and in general for the experience in the region, this is good news, both in the short term, namely the many visitors during the weekend itself, and in the longer term. Last year was a great marketing success for our city!"
Mark August 19-21 in your calendar, because the Ardeca Ypres Rally is not to be missed.
